Because of the high mortality rates associated with this disease, it is natural to ask “Is there a cure for lung cancer?” The fact is, lung cancer is usually highly treatable — and curable — provided it is caught early in its cycle.
Lung cancer caught early enough can often be treated with surgery. The reason for the high death rates from this disease is that it is often diagnosed at a late stage in its life cycle. By then, the cancer has spread to more than one part of the lung as well as to other parts of the body. Lung cancer can cause malignancies in vital organs like the brain and liver, among others.
For this reason, lung cancer caught at a late stage usually cannot be fully cured. Unfortunately, lung cancer tends to metastases (just a fancy medical term which means spreading to other parts of the body) very early in its life cycle. And at its earliest stages, the disease often does not produce any noticeable symptoms.
As a result, it tends to be caught at an advanced stage which it is far too late to cure it fully. Of course, even then, there are many treatment options available today that can effectively prolong the patient’s life.
For instance, there are cases of lung cancer patients with inoperable cancers who have had years of cancer free remission.
These facts underscore the importance of having regular health checkups so that lung cancer (and many other diseases) can be identified at an early stage.
So is there a cure for lung cancer? The answer is, “It depends.” Catch the disease early enough and the answer is “Most likely yes.” And that is an encouraging fact for a disease that evokes considerable dread.
